Greece, Crete — August 2026: wildfire situation

Vegetation on Crete dries out gradually from June onward, and August is when olive groves, maquis and dry grasses reach their lowest moisture of the year. Combined with daytime heatwaves above 38–40 °C and steady meltemi winds at force 5–7 Beaufort, conditions for rapid fire spread are at their worst of the whole season.

The meltemi is a northerly wind that blows almost continuously through most of the day in summer, sometimes for several days running. On Crete it's channelled by the mountain ranges running through the island's centre, so its strength and direction can differ between the north and south coasts on the same day. That's why it's worth checking the wind forecast for a specific town rather than the island as a whole.

August is also the peak of the holiday season — the most charter flights, fully booked hotels and rental cars on roads that can be nearly empty outside the season.
